How to choose the right tent
Whether you're going for a weekend with the family or a backwoods adventure, there are a number of things to consider when choosing a tent.
How many campers will be sleeping in the tent?
As a general rule, buy a tent rated for 2 people more than will actually sleep in it. A 2-person tent will sleep 2 adults, but it won't provide room to move around or store gear. Look for a 4-person tent if you want room to move around and storage space for gear. The bigger the group the more space you'll need, so look for tents with vestibules and screenhouses. If you're looking for extra privacy, choose a 2-room tent that divides the sleeping area.
How will you transport the tent?
The bulk and weight of your tent might not be a concern if you're travelling to the campsite in a minivan, but if you're backpacking or canoeing, you'll want to travel light and should choose a tent accordingly.
When will you be camping?
If you are a summer camper, look for tents with mesh panels at the top of the tent body or built-in vents on the fly coverage. If you're going to camp in rainy weather, be sure your tent has a good fly.
What is your budget?
Like many things, you get what you pay for in a tent. The difference between an inexpensive and an expensive tent has to do with tent materials, levels of waterproofing, fly coverage and features.
